SOUTH KOREA TRIP (2016): What to Eat Around Myeongdong - Seoul?

Myeongdong is a primary shopping district in Seoul that is always packed with people day and night. The streets are filled with lines of shops, from premium brands to street retailers. Myeongdong is a must visit place while you're in Seoul. Sometimes when visiting a place like this, you got confused in choosing  place to eat, because there are too many of them. So, let me help you a little by listing a few restaurants and cafes I've visited before.

-------

MYEONGDONG GYOZA / MYEONGDONG KYOJA / 명동교자

How to reach: Myeongdong Station (Seoul Subway Line 4), Exit 8.
Upon exiting the station, turn left onto Myeongdong 10-gil Road.
Go straight about 150m to arrive at Myeongdong Kyoja  on the right.
It is located right across Solaria Nishitetsu Hotel

MYEONGDONG KYOJA is a very well-know restaurant that has already served the customers for more than 40 years. This place is popular for both locals and tourists.

Their popular menus are kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) and mandu (Korean dumpling)

Gyoza / Mandu - KRW 10,000

I tried their mandu, 10 pieces per portion, that came on a steamer.

The mandu was really juicy and delicious. The wrapper thickness was just right, not too thick not to thin. It was really nice, enjoying these hot mandus while it was around 0°C outside the restaurant. I think MYEONGDONG KYOJA worth a try!

-------
LOCO QUAN 401

How to reach: Myeongdong Station (Seoul Subway Line 4), Exit 8.
Upon exiting the station, turn left onto Myeongdong 10-gil Road.
Go straight about 50m to arrive at Champion Building on the right (near MCM).
LOCO QUAN 401 is located on the eight floor.

What's so special about this place? Well if you're a fan of Muhan Dojeon/Infinite Challenge and Running Man, you might want to visit this restaurant owned by the cast of those shows - Ha Dong Hoon or better known as Haha. LOCO QUAN 401 is a barbecue restaurant, with Jeju black pig as its special. Since I'm a fan of Jeju black pig, I gave this place a try.

I ordered Ogyeopsal (Jeju black pig pork belly), and waited for the waiter to grill it for me. The waiters and waitresses went from table to table to serve the customers.

Ogyeopsal (Pork Belly) 200 gr - KRW 14,900

Oh that beautiful sound of sizzling meat. Hmm.

Actually, I was a bit disappointed because it was not as good as the ogyeopsal I tried back then in Jeju, but it was not bad at all. My verdict: if you are Haha's loyal fan, you should visit this place, and take some pictures at the photozone. PS: Once in a while, Haha himself visit the restaurant and do the serving.

-------
TWO TWO CHICKEN / 둘둘치킨

How to reach: Myeongdong Station (Seoul Subway Line 4), Exit 6
Just walk straight from UNIQLO around 400 m.

One night, I was just craving for fried chicken, and I remembered looking at this TWO TWO CHICKEN signage somewhere around Myeongdong. There are more than one branch of TWO TWO CHICKEN in Myeongdong, but this branch was the one I found first.

Korean people usually enjoy their frried chicken with beer, they call it chimaeg (chicken-maegju/beer). I also found some office workers hanging out here with their colleagues with a plate of chicken and a pitcher of beer on the table. How about me? This kind of restaurant doesn't sell chicken by pieces but portion, and so that night, I ordered a whole chicken for myself.

Green Onion Chicken / 파닭치킨 - KRW 19,000

I tried their Green Onion Chicken (파닭치킨). The chicken was marinated, fried, and showered with green onion as you could see above, so you should expect a strong green onion scent and aftertaste on your tongue. It was kinda unique, since I haven't tried this kind of flavor before.

Oh yes, I finished the whole portion, alone - two chicken legs, two chicken breasts, and two chicken wings.

So if you are craving for some fried chicken, you might want to visit TWO TWO CHICKEN. They also have other kind of fried chicken.

-------
YOOGANE / 유가네닭갈비

How to reach: Myeongdong Station (Seoul Subway Line 4), Exit 8.
Upon exiting the station, turn left onto Myeongdong 10-gil Road.
Go straight about 250m to arrive at Yoogane.

Dakgalbi Fried Rice - KRW 6000

I think Yoogane is a safe choice to dine in. I pick YOOGANE when I didn't know what to eat. There are a few branches of  YOOGANE around Myeongdong those could be easilly spotted. Why do I think it is a safe choice? The taste was good, the pricing was also fine. Actually, I wanted to try their dakgalbi, but the portion is for two people or more. So I just ordered their Dakgalbi Fried Rice.

Here, the server will cook for you on your table.

The fried rice was delicious! YOOGANE has already opened their branches here in Jakarta, but I haven't visited any of them. Have you tried?

-------
GAEHWA / 개화 / 開花

How to reach: Euljiro 1-Ga Station (Seoul Subway Line 2), Exit 6.
Upon exiting the station, walk straight around 200 m, then turn right to Namdaemun-Ro, and you should see the shop with the red sign like the picture below.

So you may know that Jjajangmyeon is known as a Chinese cuisine in Korea. Apparently, there is a famous Chinese restaurant nearby Myeongdong called Gaehwa. Upon entering the restaurant, you could just feel how Chinese it is, you know, those chairs, those red color, and the Chinese speaking waitresses.

I came here for their Jjajangmyeon, so I ordered one, and I after eating that delicious mandu at Myeongdong Gyoza, I was tempted to order another mandu. So here I was, sitting alone, with a bowl of Jjajangmyeon and a portion of Fried Mandu in front of me.

Jjajangmyeon - KRW 5,000

Fried Dumpling - KRW 5,000

Their Jjajangmyeon was delicious! The noodle was thin, the black bean sauce was just right, their danmuji (pickled radish) was also nice. On the other hand, the Fried Dumpling was just so so. Actually I was quite tempted to try their Tangsuyuk (sweet & sour pork), but it was quite expensive and the portion was big, so I just had to give up on it. Maybe next time.

-------
O'SULLOC TEA HOUSE /  오설록티하우스

How to reach: Myeongdong Station (Seoul Subway Line 4), Exit 6.
Walk straight 400m to arrive at O'SULLOC TEA HOUSE on the right.

O'SULLOC TEA HOUSE is a tea house that specialized in serving and selling Jeju Green Tea. There a few other branches of  O'SULLOC TEA HOUSE in Seoul. So if you are tired of shopping and looking for a place to relax and enjoy your afternoon tea, this place is the right pick. Other than green tea, they also have other tea choices like Oolong, Chrysanthemum, and Omija Tea.

The place itself was quite minimalist with plain walls, and wooden tables.

And these were some of their green tea delicacies I tried.

OSULLOC Green Tea (hot) - KRW 4,800

As you see from the picture above, their green tea was quite different. The tea leaves were not dried, still as green as fresh leaves. The tea was pretty strong that left me with a unique aftertaste I never felt before.

Green Tea O Fredo - KRW 7,000

If you like blended beverage better, you should try their Green Tea O Fredo served with green tea ice cream on the top of it. It was green tea heaven! It was not overly sweet like some of the green tea drinks, it was not overly milky, it was just right! Next time I should try their King O Fredo - an upgraded version of Green Tea O Fredo with green tea cake, azuki beans, and almond toffee crunch on the top of it. Sounds better right?

Green Tea Roll Cake - KRW 4,500

Tea time is not yet complete without the present of cakes! So I tried their Green Tea Roll Cake that was also great! Soft roll cake with green tea cream in the middle of it. What I liked about it was it was not too sweet! You could also buy the whole roll cake for KRW 15,000.

Green Tea Cheese Tiramisu - KRW 5,000
The other cake that also caught my attention is this Green Tea Cheese Tiramisu. I mean, I like green tea, I also love cheese cake and tiramisu a lot. So I wondered how this combination works. It couldn't work better!

I tell you, it was really good! You could also buy the whole cake for KRW 30,000.

Looking for some tea gift sets? You may also find it here. So if you are a green tea lover, this place is must must must visit place.

-------
CAFFE PASCUCCI

How to reach: Myeongdong Station (Seoul Subway Line 4), Exit 6.
Walk straight, then turn left at the first intersection, just go straight around 200 m and you'll find CAFFE PASCUCCI on the left.

I walked around 15 km or more a day while on this trip (as recorded by my phone apps), so you could imagine how tired I was every night that sometimes I just looked for a place to sit and rest my feet for a while. I just walked and entered this cafe randomly. It was a nice and cozy place to sit for a while.

Tiramisu - KRW 5,000

I tried their Tiramisu, and it wasn't disappointing at all. Overall it was a nice place to sit and rest for a bit while enjoying cake and a cup of coffee or tea,

There are so many restaurants around Myeongdong, maybe you could also tell me your recommendation? Myeongdong is also filled with many street snack vendors, but I should tell you that the prices are more expensive than any other areas, like twice, so I prefer to look for street snack at other places. See you on another post!
